PhD of the Future

What does the PhD of the Future looklike? Over the past two years, this question has been explored in depth by De Jonge Akademie, the National Expertise Centre forScience & Society (NEWS), and the PromovendiNetwerk Nederland (PNN).

The result is a practical guide filled with insights, tips, and manyinspiring examples of PhD candidates who have shaped their doctoraltrajectories in innovative ways, ranging from making a documentary todeveloping a software program.

The guide is intended not only for current and future PhD candidates whowish to design their doctorate in dialogue with society. Supervisors, graduateschools, university administrators, and research funders, too, will findconcrete tools to help facilitate and support such projects. Seeing that whatis unknown is often unloved, the guide aims to make these forms of doctoralresearch more visible, discussable, and feasible.

The first copy of the guide was ceremonially presented to Caspar van denBerg, Chair of Universities of the Netherlands, at the PhD of the Future eventon 16 June. Other speakers included Max van Duijn,Sicco de Knecht, Karin van Vuuren, Hester van de Bovenkamp, Lotte Krabbenborg,Hanne Oberman, Katya Sion, Dwayne Ansah, Marije Miedema, Pieter Slaman, Martijnvan der Meer, Christa Boer, Marieke Adriaanse, and Abeje Y. Mersha.
