Promovendi Netwerk Nederland (PNN) is disappointed that the UMCG is appealing to the Supereme Court in the MD/PhD lawsuit. In May 2023, the Court of Appeal in Arnhem-Leeuwarden ruled that this group of MD/PhD contract PhD candidates is entitled to an employment contract and should receive the same employment conditions as other employee PhD candidates.

In the new CLA for Dutch Universities (CAO-NU) , function-based contracts are only possible for employees from pay scale 11 and up, and pay scales 14 and up for the CLA of research institutions (CAO-OI). This excludes PhD candidates.

It's a wrap! After multiple negotiations rounds, the Association of Universities in the Netherlands (UNL) and the trade unions FNV, FBZ, AOb, and CNV Overheid have reached a provisional agreement on the development of employment terms and conditions for Dutch Universities.

PhD candidates and postdocs are the tenured staff of the future. Therefore, it is essential that their contribution to science is recognized and rewarded. Promovendi Netwerk Nederland (PNN) and Young Science in Transition (YoungSiT) have been happy to witness the developing recognition and rewards (R&R) movement in science, but the current program is not satisfactory for early career researchers yet.
