Promovendi Overleggen

Examples of the activities of EPAR include the supervision survey, in which PhD candidates were asked about their supervisors and supervision tracks, and the Introduction and Career Planning Day, where EPAR offered both an introduction to new PhD candidates as well as activities and workshops for all PhD candidates. EPAR has a central board as well as representatives for all faculties.

In this meeting the executive board, delegates of the works council and the organization for foreign PhD candidates, and PhD representatives of all faculties of the Radboud University meet to discuss current and future issues. The PON looks after the interest of all PhD candidates in Nijmegen. It pays attention to the terms of employment, supervision and course offer, to information on practical matters like the printing of a dissertation, and to job perspectives and national and international developments in learning, science, and policy. Also, the PON regularly conducts surveys among PhD candidates to formulate recommendations and propose actions with respect to the above-mentioned issues.

PromooD (Technische Universiteit Delft)
PromooD is the independent representative body of PhD candidates at Delft University of Technology (TU Delft). We signalize bureaucratic obstacles and general problems that PhD candidates face and report them to the various university boards, and we work out and stimulate the implementation of solutions to these problems. In addition, we provide PhD candidates a network through which they can meet other PhD candidates (monthly PhD cafe), we organize professional and social activities (workshops, lectures, drinks) and we keep PhD candidates up-to-date about PhD related issues and events (through our monthly e-zine and website).

PromoVE (Technische Universiteit Eindhoven)
PromoVE is a 15-year old association that aims to protect the interests of all PhD candidates of Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e). PromoVE offers help to PhD candidates who are in difficulty either directly or by referring them to the right person or official body. Furthermore, PhD candidates are updated through our website and newsletter about events, changes in, for example the collective labour agreement of PhD candidates and other interesting news.

UvAPro (Universiteit van Amsterdam)
Working as a PhD candidate comes with unique costs and benefits. PhD candidates produce a major part of the university’s scientific output, but our career perspectives often depend heavily on our supervisor. We are paid to further our personal scientific development but at the same time our chances of a career in academics are slim. UvAPro represents the interests of PhD candidates at the University of Amsterdam and informs them about these unique aspects of their job. Our activities include negotiating with the different Faculty and University Boards and organizing seminars and symposia.

LEO (Universiteit Leiden)
The Leiden PhD Council (Leo) aims to represent the interests of all PhD candidates affiliated with Leiden University. We have regular meetings with the rector and the various deans, have contacts with the local union representative, and keep in close touch with the PhD candidates in the University and Faculty councils. Apart from that, we organize a number of social events. Every month, PhDrinks are held at a local bar in Leiden. Here, PhD candidates from all over the university meet and socialize. Furthermore, once a month the PhD discussion group is held. This forum allows PhD candidates to present their work to a broad audience, and, at the same time, gives PhD candidates the chance to experience some of the extraordinary wealth of research areas in our university.

ProVUM (Universiteit Maastricht)
ProVUM is a network of Maastricht PhD candidates, which strives for fair treatment and equal opportunities for PhD candidates in Maastricht. We aim to connect PhD candidates from various research schools, graduate schools, and faculties with each other and stimulate an open discussion about PhD-related matters, such as supervision of PhD candidates, their legal rights, career opportunities, etc. We are also represented in the University Council, which enables us to monitor policy changes, raise issues that affect our colleagues (i.e., YOU), and give advice when needed.

P-NUT (Universiteit Twente)
P-NUT is the PhD Network of the University of Twente. Our goal is to represent, inform, and connect PhD Candidates.
P-NUT represents: By conveying the voice of PhD candidates, and by collaborating constructively with stakeholders at the university, they contribute to plans and regulations from which all who are involved can benefit. Their efforts are paying off: P-NUT has regular meetings with the Human Resources department, the head of the Twente Graduate School, and the Rector Magnificus prof. dr. Ed Brinksma.
P-NUT informs: Starting your PhD involves a lot more than just the academic affairs. Many PhD candidates find themselves to be full-time employed for the first time in their lives. With the large numbers of international PhD candidates at the University of Twente, many are faced with finding their way in the Dutch employment system, as well. For all PhD’s at the university P-NUT organizes monthly lunch meetings, aimed at providing practical information on various PhD related issues.
P-NUT connects: P-NUT is aware that the life of the PhD candidate can sometimes be challenging, and that sometimes a little advice goes a long way. And P-NUT hopes to contribute their advice. Most of the time doing your research and writing your dissertation is a stimulating experience. Doing a PhD represents years of opportunities for personal and professional development, starting to master your discipline, and meeting people from all over the world. P-NUT wants to play a role in your social experience as well.

Finally, PrOUt organises professional and social activities for all PhDs in Utrecht, such as drinks, lectures, workshops and information markets.

ProVU (Vrije Universiteit)

This is done by means of (a) representation in the Works Council, (b) regular meetings with the rector magnificus and other officials, and (c) the representation at PNN. Furthermore, ProVU organizes a PhD day every 18 months to bring PhD candidates into contact with each other and to inform them about relevant issues. Finally, apart from all the serious work, ProVU also pays attention to the social aspect by organizing regular drinks aka `borrels’.
